While the advancement of artificial
intelligence creates positive developments, we are also moving towards a
society structure that is more surveilled and scrutinized. China is leading
this. With its social credit system, China is 'correcting' its citizens,
spreading surveillance technologies to other countries through trade channels.
Artificial intelligence, on the other hand, is indispensable for our lives. For
example, when British comedians have a hard time finding a joke, they find the
solution by asking jokes from artificial intelligence. Although, it is
difficult to say that artificial intelligence is very advanced in this regard.
On the other hand, sex robots are coming. We can say, “These will have great
effects”. Touchless orgasm technologies are being developed. How come? These
are apps that stimulate orgasm regions of the brain. Horror scenarios also
attract attention: Awareness of artificial intelligence opens the door to
dystopias. However, it is a fact that we are very far from this – perhaps for
now. This is not the most dangerous development; artificial intelligence
weapons are even worse. These weapons now operate independently, without taking
orders from humans. This contradicts the original production philosophy of
these weapons. Accordingly, the human hand would have controlled these weapons,
but that is not the case.
The use of robots in restaurants arouses
interest. For example, we encounter the fully automated pizza robot, which
reflects all the stages of pizza making and finally produces a delicious pizza.
However, in other instances, the fully automated waitress model draws criticism
and is not humane. In medicine, aside from some risks, artificial intelligence
is making significant progress. It is an ointment for the disabled. But the
sociological dimension should not be overlooked in this discussion: Equal access
to AI tools is essential for social justice. However, these technologies are
quite expensive and mostly serve the wealthy. Maybe for now… In the coming
years, such technologies may become cheaper by mass production and enter homes.
This brings to mind the sugar and blood pressure monitors, which are
indispensable for the homes of the elderly, especially today.
Hollywood is on strike. As in a Black
Mirror episode, the images of the players will be taken with artificial
intelligence and then movies can be shot without the need for the actors.
That's why the players are on the street. Meanwhile, the authors are suing AI
companies, saying "generative AI is based on our writings." Likewise,
painters claim copyrights from AI companies. While all this is going on, we
should note that fans of AI, which we might call 'intelligence fetishists',
overlook the discriminations artificial intelligence introduces. When data is
discriminatory, artificial intelligence also achieves discriminatory results.
For example, if women are not recruited before, they are not hired again.
Artificial law programs, on the other hand, often criminalize Blacks; because
the overt and implicit racism of the American judicial system is reflected in
the data.
Sociology has already raised warning flags
about possible abuses of artificial intelligence. However, unexpected abuses
have also emerged: especially in India, scammers are asking for money using
artificial intelligence, imitating users' voices and images. Truth and lies are
mixed. Faces are changed by deepfake; they are portrayed as doing things that
people don't do. We can also associate this truth-lie ambiguity with concepts
such as post-truth and alternative truth popularized by Trump. But there's more
to it: chatbots like ChatGPT fabricate data and references. It shows research
that hasn't been done. Or when you want it to read a poet’s poem, he writes a
poem to himself and reads it, and he doesn't even realize that it is his own
poem. Our age will be an age where truth and falsehood are intertwined. It is
very difficult to prevent this.
Against all these problems, various,
interrelated concepts have been produced. These consist of examples such as
ethical artificial intelligence, responsible artificial intelligence, humane
artificial intelligence etc.. But who listens to these suggestions among big
companies and big states? Nobody. Therefore, these benevolent initiatives
cannot become the norm.
The director of the movie ‘Oppenheimer’ relates
his film to artificial intelligence and warns against a catastrophic scenario.
According to him, at this rate, artificial intelligence will have deadly
consequences like the atomic bomb. This is what will happen if the necessary
regulations are not made in the field of artificial intelligence. The only way
out is for the labor and democracy forces around the world to wake up to these
developments and take action. However, these forces have other agendas. It's
not time for AI justice. If humanity is to have a future, this has to be the
time…
